Today’s Prompt is:

Gwen Bell – 15 Minutes to Live

We are afraid of truth, afraid of fortune, afraid of death, and afraid of each other. Our age yields no great and perfect persons. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

You just discovered you have fifteen minutes to live.

1. Set a timer for fifteen minutes.
2. Write the story that has to be written.

(Author: Gwen Bell)

My Story:

If I have learned anything in this life it is this.  There is nothing more devastating to the self than fear.  If a life is to be lived and lived well we must not destroy our fear, but learn to live with it despite it.  Courage is not the absence of fear, but doing what needs to be done even when you’re afraid.

I don’t deny that this is much easier said than done.  But done it must be – or else lived hobbled and enslaved to our fears.  Relegated to the shadows, unfulfilled and unhappy.

I have many hero’s in this life and they have one thing in common.  The courage to live their lives in defiance of their fears and true to their inner selves.  They are unique.  They are vibrant.  They are ALIVE.  From military veterans, to teachers, to the work-a-day joe each of these people has shown me a part of what it means to live.  I can only hope that I’ve lived up to even a portion of the courage they have shown.  It’s taken a long time for me to even face my fears let alone defy them.  But more and more I try to live my live by the following quotes from Eleanor Roosevelt:

The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.

You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do.

Do what you feel in your heart to be right – for you’ll be criticized anyway. You’ll be damned if you do, and damned if you don’t.

They seems such obvious observations at the surface.  But how many times do we stick to the safe path rather than pursue our dreams – out of fear.  How many times do we remain silent rather than stand up for someone or against an injustice – out of fear.

To live life, a meaningful life, is to live a courageous life.  “Do one thing each day which scares you.” – Eleanor Roosevelt.  By trying to align myself with this, I have taken up this challenge to write each day.  I’m willing to dare to be courageous.  To dare to be challenged – even with the certain fear that I might fail or worse, succeed.  Will you join me?

Today is day one of the challenge.  Who are you now?  Who will you be at day 30?  I’m striving for a better me.  That which does not change and grow – dies.  I don’t want to be a zombie – do you?
