#Trust30 Day 8 – Afraid to Do by Mary Jaksch

Afraid to Do by Mary Jaksch

The other terror that scares us from self-trust is our consistency; a reverence for our past act or word, because the eyes of others have no other data for computing our orbit than our past acts, and we are loath to disappoint them. – Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson says: “Always do what you are afraid to do.” What is ‘too scary’ to write about? Try doing it now.

Today’s Sentence:

Somedays you just can’t win for losing.

What’s “too scary” to write about?

Well I don’t actually have a problem with writing scary.  I do it well.  Scary, dark.  These are things I write very well.  My problem has always been the well meaning criticism “why do you always write such dark stuff.  You should write happy stuff.”

Yes, well – happy is all well and good but it doesn’t ring true.  When I write happy it reads as forced and unnatural.  And besides, if a story is nothing but happy followed by happy then there’s no obstacle to be overcome, there’s no meat to the story.
